The Quran is the holy book of Islam and the final revelation sent by Allah to humanity through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Muslims believe that the Quran is itself a miracle. More than fourteen centuries after its revelation, its message, language, preservation, teachings, historical accounts, and descriptions of the natural world continue to inspire reflection and study.
In this guide, we will explore some of the most remarkable signs mentioned in the Quran while carefully distinguishing between what the Quran explicitly states and modern interpretations of its verses.
What Is a Miracle in the Quran?
In Islam, the Quran is considered the greatest enduring miracle given to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Allah says:
“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a surah the like thereof…”
Quran 2:23
The miraculous nature of the Quran is traditionally discussed through several aspects, including:
- Its extraordinary Arabic language and eloquence
- Its preservation
- Its teachings and message
- Its prophecies
- Its historical accounts
- Signs in creation mentioned throughout its verses
1. The Preservation of the Quran
Allah says:
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian.”
Quran 15:9
The preservation of the Quran is one of the most important subjects when studying its history.
The Quran was memorized and written during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and Quranic memorization has continued generation after generation.
Today, millions of Muslims around the world memorize all or significant portions of the Quran.

2. The Unique Language of the Quran
The Quran challenged those who doubted its divine origin to produce something comparable to it.
Allah says:
“Or do they say, ‘He invented it’? Say, ‘Then bring ten surahs like it that have been invented…’”
Quran 11:13
Its linguistic structure, rhetoric, rhythm, meanings, and style have been central to Muslim discussions of the Quran’s miraculous nature for centuries.

3. The Development of the Human Embryo
The Quran describes stages associated with human development:
“And indeed, We created humankind from an extract of clay, then placed each as a sperm-drop in a secure place, then We developed the drop into a clinging clot, then developed the clot into a lump of flesh…”
Quran 23:12–14
These verses are frequently discussed in modern conversations about the Quran and embryology.
They should be approached carefully: the verses are primarily signs inviting reflection on Allah’s creation, while claims that particular Arabic terms correspond exactly to modern scientific stages can involve interpretation.

4. The Expansion of the Universe
Allah says:
“We built the universe with great might, and We are certainly expanding it.”
Quran 51:47
This verse has received considerable attention because modern cosmology describes an expanding universe.
Different translations and interpretations of the Arabic wording should be considered when studying the relationship between this verse and modern cosmology.

5. The Origin of Life and Water
Allah says:
“And We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?”
Quran 21:30
Water is fundamental to life as we know it.
The Quran repeatedly draws attention to water as a source of life, vegetation, agriculture, and the revival of the earth.

6. Mountains
Allah says:
“Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs?”
Quran 78:6–7
Mountains are described using the striking image of pegs.
Modern discussions sometimes compare this imagery with the deep structures associated with mountain ranges. However, claims about exact geological predictions should be presented cautiously because the Quran is not written as a geology textbook.

7. The Meeting of Two Bodies of Water
Allah says:
“He merges the two bodies of fresh and salt water, yet between them is a barrier they never cross.”
Quran 55:19–20
Other relevant passages include Quran 25:53.
These verses have inspired discussions concerning boundaries and mixing between different bodies of water.

8. The Darkness of the Deep Sea
Allah gives an extraordinary comparison:
“Or like the darkness in a deep sea, covered by waves upon waves, topped by clouds. Darkness upon darkness…”
Quran 24:40
The verse’s primary context is a spiritual analogy, but its imagery of darkness and waves in a deep sea has also attracted modern attention.

9. The Protective Sky
Allah says:
“And We have made the sky a well-protected canopy, still they turn away from its signs.”
Quran 21:32
Earth’s atmosphere plays essential roles in sustaining and protecting life.
The verse encourages people to contemplate the sky as one of Allah’s signs.

10. The Sun and Moon Moving in Their Orbits
Allah says:
“And He is the One Who created the day and the night, the sun and the moon—each travelling in an orbit.”
Quran 21:33
The Quran does not portray the heavenly bodies as stationary. It describes each as moving according to an appointed order.

11. Iron in the Quran
Allah says:
“And We sent down iron with its great might, benefits for humanity…”
Quran 57:25
The expression “sent down” has generated considerable discussion.
Some modern writers connect the verse with the cosmic origin of heavy elements. Classical interpretations and the Arabic usage of the expression should also be considered rather than presenting one modern interpretation as the only possible meaning.

12. The Forelock and Human Behavior
In Surah Al-‘Alaq, Allah says:
“A lying, sinful forelock.”
Quran 96:16
Some modern discussions connect this description with functions associated with the frontal regions of the brain.
This is an interesting area of reflection, but such comparisons should not be exaggerated into claims that the verse is a technical description of neuroscience.

13. The Prophecy Concerning the Romans
The Quran states:
“The Romans have been defeated in a nearby land. Yet following their defeat, they will triumph within three to nine years.”
Quran 30:2–4
The passage refers to the Byzantine-Roman conflict with the Persian Empire and is among the most frequently discussed Quranic prophecies.

14. Pharaoh and His Body
Allah says regarding Pharaoh:
“Today We will preserve your corpse so that you may become an example for those who come after you.”
Quran 10:92
This verse has generated extensive discussion about Pharaoh, ancient Egypt, and preserved royal remains.
Identifying the Pharaoh of the Exodus with a particular Egyptian mummy, however, remains debated and should not be presented as an established historical fact.

15. The Quran’s Challenge to Humanity
The Quran presents a remarkable challenge:
“Say, ‘If humans and jinn were to come together to produce the equivalent of this Quran, they could not produce its equal…’”
Quran 17:88
For Muslims, the Quran’s miracle is therefore much greater than any single scientific comparison.
Its language, message, preservation, spiritual influence, prophecies, teachings, and invitation to reflect upon creation form part of a much larger picture.

Are There Only a Few Miracles in the Quran?
No fixed Islamic number limits the Quran to “10,” “20,” or “50” miracles.
The Quran contains hundreds of verses inviting humanity to reflect upon the heavens, earth, human creation, animals, plants, water, history, previous civilizations, morality, and the signs of Allah.
For Guided Muslim, we will therefore continue expanding this series rather than claiming that there is an exact number of Quranic miracles.
Final Thoughts
The Quran repeatedly encourages human beings to observe, think, question, and reflect.
Allah says:
“We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this Quran is the truth.”
Quran 41:53
For Muslims, the strongest reason to believe in the Quran does not depend upon one scientific claim. Its significance comes from the revelation as a whole—its message of Tawhid, guidance, language, preservation, teachings, and signs.
Allah knows best.
